THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POSTURAL BALANCE AND TEMPERAMENT IN ADULTS INVOLVED IN RECREATIONAL FOOTBALL
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2014, Vol 30, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. Numerous studies indicate that sporting success depends not only on motor skills, but also on athletes’ mental characteristics and features of the environment. However, little is known about the effects of character traits on players’ static balance. The purpose of this study is to analyse the relationship between the stability of upright posture and temperamental traits of adults involved in recreational football.Material and methods. The participants were 27 subjects aged between 16 and 58 years (M = 35.4 SD = 16.9), engaged in recreational soccer 3-4 times a week for 1.5 hours. Postural stability was examined using a Kistler force platform in the two conditions of standing in an upright posture: with eyes open and eyes closed. Temperament was assessed using the FCB-TI self-report questionnaire. Results: The analysis of variance 2-way ANOVA with 4 repeated measures 2 (Trait of temperament: High, Low) x 4 (Standard Deviation: Medal-Lateral Plane, Anterior-Posterior Plane, Eyes Open, Eyes Closed) showed the interaction between static balance and sensory sensitivity. In the highly sensory sensitive sample, loss of the visual analyser resulted in a decrease of standard deviation values in the medial-lateral plane, while increasing this parameter’s value in the anterior-posterior plane. Conclusions. Among temperamental traits understood as the formal characteristics of behaviour, only the sensory sensitivity may influence the capacity of people involved in recreational football to maintain static body balance. It is recommended that the balance training with deactivating or limiting vision should be applied to a greater extent to athletes with a high level of sensory sensitivity.

Effect of exercise on skeletal muscle protein metabolism
Contractile activity affects protein metabolism in skeletal muscles. That effect depends mostly on a type of exercise (resistance or endurance) and on a diet composition during the post exercise recovery. Resistance exer...
