UNHEALTHY BEHAVIOR AS A FORM OF THRILL SEEKING: AN ATTEMPT TO CONSTRUCT A MODEL
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 6
Abstract
Background. The need for thrill seeking may be a strong predictor of addictive behaviour. Thrill seekers prefer socially unacceptable behaviours, such as cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse, or narcotics. The goal of our study was to determine whether it is possible to construct a model in which an objective factor (the concentration of cotinine, the primary metabolite of nicotine) interacts with personal characteristics (temperament, thrill seeking).Material and methods. We examined 130 persons, 73 women and 57 men (mean age 23±4.30 years. The biochemical variable was the urine concentration of cotinine (assayed after base liquid hydrolysis and chloride extraction by high-capacity liquid chromatography with UV detection). The psychological instruments used included Strelau & Zawadzki’s Temperament Questionnaire (PTS), Zaleśkiewicz’s questionnaire to measure risk level (SIRI), Studenski’s multi-factor scale of risky behaviors (WSZR), Makarowski’s unhealthy behavior inventory (IZA), and Zuckerman’s thrill-Seeking scale. For statistical analysis we used the Amos statistical program, version 7.0.Results. The higher the result from the SIRI (instrumental and stimulatory risk), the lower the concentration of cotinine. Persons with high SIRI scores, e.g. pilots, athletes, and managers, smoke less. Thus persons with a strong need for exciting events are characterized by a chronic lack of arousal. This is a pathogenic perspective, whose purpose is to point out causal relations between pathological factors and susceptibility to illness.Conclusions. Path analysis used in this research makes possible to confirm the hypothesis that socially unacceptable thrill can be replaced by socially acceptable behaviors.
