ASSESSMENT OF POSTURAL STRATEGIES AND SUBJECTIVE SENSATIONS OF PA- TIENTS WITH LATERAL ANKLE INSTABILITY AFTER REHABILITATION

Abstract

Introduction A high risk of lateral instability among people after inversion ankle sprain is the reason why it is important to ascertain the possible factors contributing to that risk in comparison with the control group and to introduce an intensive rehabilitation programme counteracting the negative effects of this disorder. Aim The aim of the present study was to evaluate postural control in people with lateral ankle instability and their subjective sensations concerning the functional condition of the ankle immediately after rehabilitation in comparison with a control group. Our research hypothesis was that after rehabilitation the parameters of patients with lateral ankle instability would not be significantly different from those of healthy individuals. Material and methods Forty-two participants in the study were 14 women and 29 men aged between 19 and 56 and divided into the control group (N = 22) with chronic lateral ankle instability after rehabilitation and the control group (N = 21) made up of individuals without a history of ankle sprains. The study was conducted by means of an instrumental test using the DELOS Postural Proprioceptive System based on Riva’s concept and testing postural strategy both in static and dynamic conditions. The participants were also asked to fill out questionnaires which were helpful to assess the subjective functional conditions of ankle joints. Results Differences in favour of the study group were found in the static test with the eyes closed and in the dynamic Riva test in a comparison between the injured leg and the subsequent healthy legs in the control group. The participants from the control group had higher scores in most questions in comparison with the study group, however, the differences were not significant in the clinical evaluation. Conclusions Patients with lateral ankle instability had better control, displaying a higher level of postural strategy in the injured leg in comparison with the control group, which may confirm the relevance of intensive proprioception and stability training during the rehabilitation process. However, subjectively, the participants from the study group see themselves as being in a worse condition than those in the control group, which may confirm the existence of some other important factors that may affect the functioning of patients with lateral ankle instability.
