Axiological Crafts, or Modern Educator as a Guide Through the Practical Ethics
Journal Title: Studies in Global Ethics and Global Education - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 3
Abstract
The lack of ethical skills is a key issue in the face of multidimensional crises. Competences are no qualification. Pedagogy is not a technical discipline; it requires patiently worked out competences. We need axiological awareness that among other things would allow us to see modern education primarily as knowledge about values. We need ethical skills, which pedagogy will be a practical test of. Nobody is born virtuous; we have to practice our moral potential, just like in the case of a craftsman, it is a matter of practice. Contemporary educators are a bit like a craftsman, artisan, whose pursuit of perfection is not burdened with a vision of constant lack of accomplishment but with the passion of having achieved the award by the very pursuit for perfection. Ethics knowledge can be also obtained by apprenticeship, by becoming a specialist and practitioner at the same time. Ethics knows what pedagogy carries out; ethics answers the question “why” while pedagogy responds to the “how” question. Modern education is mainly possible as global ethics, a common knowledge on morality and values, specialization and expertise, which we expect in the form of various certificates, diplomas, and which should begin with moral competences. Nowadays, they are as practical and needed as other skills that we straightforward call craft, occupation, profession. Ethics is of apprentice nature.
