Azadirachta indica (Neem) bark Extract Mediated Rapid Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles and Study of its Catalytic Activity
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Chemistry and Environment (IJRCE) - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 3
Abstract
The bark extract of Azadirachta indica (Neem) is rich in different types of plant secondary metabolites such as terpenoids, flavanoids, saponins, etc. We have demonstrated the use of the bark extract for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles in water at room temperature under very mild conditions. The synthesis of the gold nanoparticles was complete in several minutes and there was no need of additional stabilizing or capping agents. The gold nanoparticles were characterized by Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy, HRTEM, and X-Ray diffraction studies. The synthesized gold nanoparticles have been used as an efficient catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in water at room temperature and the kinetics of the reduction reaction has been studied spectrophotometrically.
