Photosynthetic Bacteria Organic Wastewater Treatment: Effect of Anaerobic-Pretreatment

Abstract
Effect of nutrients addition was determined in brewery wastewater with and without an initial anaerobic pretreatment. Non-pretreated Influent (10,000 mgl-1 COD) inoculated with a photo-bacterium named Z08 resulted in bacterial biomass of 826mgl-1 DCW, COD, TN, and TP were reduced by 27%, 42% and 17% after 3 d HRT. Consecutive supplement of 26mgl-1 Fe2+ and 200mgl-1 NH2-CO-NH2 into the influent recorded 42.3%, 37% and 22%, 51.3%, 46% and 41% reductions in COD, TN and TP respectively with the corresponding biomass of 989.7 and 1350 mgl-1 DCW. Anaerobic dark influent pretreatment without external seeding yielded effluent rich in VFA (134mgl-1), COD decreased by 12% and total nitrogen recorded 10% reduction whilst total phosphorus remained unchanged. Further treatment of anaerobic dark pretreated effluent with the isolate Z08 had a better impact on the treatment reducing the pollutants (COD, TN and TP) by 40%, 58% and 27% with bacterial cell mass of 1150 mgl-1 DCW. Supplement of anaerobic dark pretreated effluent with 26mgl-1 Fe2+ resulted in 32%, 37% and 17% reductions in COD, TN and TP with slight decrease in bacterial biomass from 1150 to 1058mgl-1 DCW. While addition of 200mgl-1 NH2-CO-NH2 to the effluent also resulted to a better impact on the treatment, reducing COD, TN, and TP by 63.5%, 68.9%, and 44.2%. The best impact was achieved when effluent with 200mgl-1 NH2-CO-NH2 was treated under binary light sources that co-generated light energy. Ferrous addition to influent stream favored pollutants reduction more than its addition in the anaerobic partially treated effluent in the presence of soluble ions. The inability of ferrous ions to impact positively in the anaerobic partially treated effluent could be attributed to chemical inhibition associated with Fe2+ in the presence of soluble metabolites as well as complexation effect by the large quantity of TP in the initial wastewater.
