BALANCING THE ACT-SELF MEDICATION WITH ANTIBIOTICS

Abstract

Self-medication is defined as the use of drugs for the treatment of self-diagnosed disorders or symptoms or the continued use of prescribed drug for chronic or recurrent disease or symptoms. In developing countries like India, most illnesses are treated by self-mediation. Demerit in the self-medication seen through missed diagnosis and delays in appropriate treatment. Maximal antibiotic treatment for all patients with a bacterial infection is non-viable, because it will rapidly induce resistance and exhaust this finite resource. Excessive use of antibiotics and their influence on the community over a period of time discussed in this paper.
