«BІДНАйДЕННя УКРАїНИ» Уявлення українських інтелектуальних еліт ХІХ–початку ХХ століття про місце і роль України в Європі
Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2014, Vol 13, Issue 50
Abstract
in the following essay, changes in the representation of ukraine and ukrainians by ukrainian intellectual elites in the 18th and 19th centuries are presented. Certain stages, conditioned by the proliferation in this representation by new socio-political and cultural ideas and how the ukrainian situation appeared in different European countries, are selected. it is noted that in the first half of the 19th century, the bearers of the idea of Cossack ukraine permeated throughout the nobility, which collaborated with the russian autocracy, in order to regain the old Cossack privileges. a new, more democratic generation of ukrainian intellectuals viewed the ukrainian peasants as carriers of ancient ethnic features and values. the idea of ukraine gradually took on an ethno-social colouring. it was reflected in the works of famous ukrainian scientists and writers, such as “the History of rus’ ” and “act of God: the Book of the ukrainian People”. in the second half of the 19th century, the ukrainian community movement (“hromadivstvo”) continued to develop the idea of the ukrainian people, but did not move to establish an independent state. the creation of scientific institutions in ukrainian Galicia – then under the rule of austria – and the active development of ukrainian studies, established the foundation of the idea of creating a united independent ukrainian state. ukrainian scientists and writers, including the historians M. drahomanov, M. Hrushevskyj and the geographer s. rudnytskyj (and many others) were very relevant to this process. Justification for their idea of an independent ukraine is reflected in the encyclopaedia, “the ukrainian People: Past and Present” (1914–1916).
