Narrative identity: Stoic conception of identity

Journal Title: Miscellanea Anthropologica et Sociologica - Year 2016, Vol 17, Issue 2

Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the concept of the soul and identity in Stoic philosophy, and refers to a combination of original texts Stoic (Cleanthes, Chrysippus) and their latercommentators (Philo of Alexandria, Simplicius of Cilicia, Origen, Plutarch), which theauthor of the article utilizes to prove the importance of the theory of the Stoics, whichwas in relation to himself (cura sui), and to the understanding ego directing the mind orsoul, which essentially allowed people the opportunity to get closer to each other and tothe Universe. As proposed by the author, this description fits perfectly into the contemporaryunderstanding of philosophy, not only as a speculative form of thinking, but also asa spiritual exercise as proposed by researchers such as Michel Foucault and Pierre Hadot.
