Building a Company’s Network Position through Participation in Business Associations

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential network effects – in terms of informational, reputational and regulatory benefits – that companies can derive from participation in business associations, the latter being construed as synonymous with corporate networks. The paper offers a theoretical underpinning, involving the relational and structural aspects of the social capital theory, for approaching and examining business associations as networks. Based on the theory of social embeddedness, potential network effects are identified, while at the same time bringing attention to the need for diversifying engagement in business associations in order to ensure that the company reaps the benefits of networking by optimizing its bonding (relational embeddedness) and bridging capital (structural embeddedness), and by occupying a structural hole (positional embeddedness).
