Byzantium and the Baghdad Caliphate at the end of the IXth – the first half of the Xth century
Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
The article examines the political relations of Byzantium and the Baghdad caliphate at the end of the IXth – the first half of the Xth century. These states are analyzed as important centers of international systems that developed in the early Middle Ages. The author notes the important changes that have occurred in the nature of the relationship between the two states during this time. In the reign of the first emperors of the Macedonian dynasty (867-1056) Byzantium strengthens its international positions and passes to external expansion aimed at reviving its influence in the Middle East. The Abbasid Caliphate strives to restrain the Byzantine offensive, but the gradual disintegration of his political system leads to the loss of leadership in the region. Separatism of the rulers of certain regions of the caliphate turns them into independent political actors, who increasingly establish independent ties with Constantinople. A serious blow to the authority of Baghdad is caused by the political rise of Shia islam, which is expressed in the emergence of the caliphate of the Fatimids and the state of the Buyids. Constraining factor for Byzantine expansion for a while is a complex relationship with the Danube Bulgaria and Kievan Rus’. However, after the death of the Bulgarian king Simeon (927), relations between Constantinople and its northern neighbors are normalized, which frees up the resources of the empire for eastern expansion. Baghdad is losing the leadership position, which was fixed by the liquidation of the state of the Caliphs by the Shiite dynasty of Buyids.
