Abstract
„Center”, „Periphery” and Questions of Cultural Identity in the Debates of Orthodoxy with Catholicism (Contexts and Change) Abstract The terms "center" and "periphery" are used by representatives of many sciences in describing different phenomena: geographical, socio - political, military, historical, ethnical and cultural. The question of “center” and “periphery” has been specially manifested in the relations between the Orthodox and the Catholics. Center - Rome - in the person of the Pope has aspired to supremacy in the Church, while those who felt like being the periphery of Rome waged a constant struggle for equality. This is why the Orthodox tried to disobey the influence of Rome and, consequently, to preserve their religious identity. This article provides an overview of the main trends in the polemical religious disputes of Western and Eastern Christianity from the 12th century till the 19th.
