Changes in psycho-physiological indices in male valleyball players during 5-day international tournament

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 1

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine changes in selected morning blood and psychological indices in male players during 5-day volleyball tournament. Ten elite male players, members of the National Volleyball Team participated into 5-day an international volleyball tournament (VT). Capillary blood was sampled in the morning of the day before competition (baseline values), and on each successive day of the tournament. Plasma cortisol (C), testosterone (T), glucose (G), urea (U), kreatine kinase (CK) were determined every day in unfrozen samples. Directly after blood sampling examined players filled 3 questionnaires, one for estimation of state anxiety (A), mental-(MD) and physical disposition (PhD). One-way ANOVA with repeated measures followed by post-hock test were used to distinguish differences of mean variables detected on the six days. Mean values of U,MD and PhD did not vary throughout the period, whereas the other variables significantly (p<0.05) fluctuated. CK gradually increased to rich maximal values at the end of VT. T was relatively stable following 1st and 2nd day of VT but suddenly dropped (by 23%) on 3rd day and remained lower up to the end. Interestingly, on 3rd day A was the highest and MD and PhD were the worst during the whole period. Significant correlation (n=60) were found between A and T (-0.40*), A and G (-0.27*) and T and CK (-.0.35*) were found. Examined variables demonstrated significant day-to-day variations. Psychometric variables (A, MD, PhD) seem to be related to some blood indices (T, G).
