CHILDREN’S SPONTANEOUS DRAWING – A NECESSARY PLAY ACTIVITY OR A USELESS MESS? THE INFLUENCE OF ELECTRONIC MEDIA ON CHANGES IN CHILDREN’S DRAWING SCHEMAS

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2013, Vol 45, Issue 3

Abstract

Abstract: The issue of child drawing artwork has been widely described in the literature and a lot of research on this problem has been conducted with the use of various research methods. This research has found, among other things, that the development of child artwork goes through phases. The general outline of these developmental phases has not changed to this day. If what and how the child draws is the outcome of his or her knowledge and vision, it may be assumed that the contemporary child draws in a different way to the child described in the literature on the subject. Both knowledge and perception relate not only to the child’s personality, his or her emotions, attitudes and intelligence, but they also undergo continuous changes connected with external factors in the form of yet another conventions and cultural phenomena, including, first of all, the dynamically changing media. The article presents research on drawing activity in children aged 2-6 that was conducted at an interval of 10 years. The description of child drawing artwork resulting from the research made it possible to show not only changes in what and how the child draws but, first of all, to define certain alarming phenomena related to child development.
