CHINESE ENVOYS, DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS  AND TRAVELLERS IN EURASIA. A short historical survey

Abstract

Anna Eva Budura, historian and sinologist presents her findings about the life and achievements of outstanding personalities of the history of Chinese diplomacy. Envoys and diplomatic missions sent along the many silk roads that headed during the Centuries west, south and nord-west on the Eurasian continent, along the maritime silk roads which headed east, south and south-west on the seas and oceans were messengers of the imperial courts of the Chinese empire, carrying out a foreign policy which main aim and pursuit was to assure peace and tranquility on the borders of the empire and recognition of their emperors’s supremacy. Men of culture, but also courageous warriors when needed these diplomatic envoys opened up new roads, made friends, collected precious information, wrote travel books, widenning the area of knowledge about far away places, peoples, customs and habits, presenting treasures of the Chinese spiritual and material life. Biographies of outstanding envoys like Zhang Qian, Ban Chao, Feng Liao, princeses like Xie You and Wencheng, budist monks like Xuanzang and Yixin, Jianzhen, daoist monk like Qiu Chuji, navigators like Zheng He, men of letters like Yang Zai and Zhao Ji and many more ilustrate each historical period of China, its main tasks and achievements. Also present in this essay are the biographies of travellers like Zhou Daguan and Wang Dayuan and their outstanding writings. Anna Budura’s essay is the first attempt in the Romanian historiography to summerize all these knowledges and present them to the Romanian historians and to a large public intrested in the history of Chinese diplomacy .
