Clinical and Microbiological Profile of HIV Patients in Latur District, Maharashtra (India)
Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
Infections are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in HIV seropositive patients. The objective behind this work was to determine the prevalence of respiratory, gastro-intestinal and other pathogens in 100 HIV seropositive patients in Latur district (Maharastra). Sputum samples, stool samples, oral swabs and cerebrospinal fluid were collected and processed. Stool samples were concentrated and examined by microscopy method for enteric parasites. Oral swab and cerebrospinal fluid were also examined microscopically and culture for fungal pathogens. A total of 141 pathogens were detected in 78 patients as more than one pathogen was observed in 41 patients. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was the commonest isolate (20%) followed by Candida albicance (15.60 %) and Cryptosporidium parvum (12.05%). Tuberculosis was the commonest infection seen in HIV seropositive patients followed by Candidiasis and cryptosporidiosis. The type of pathogens infecting HIV patients vary from region to region therefore such patients should be constantly screened for these pathogens. KEYWORDS: Mycobacterium, Candidiasis , Cryptosporidiosis, tuberculosis, HIV.
