Clinicopathological study of oral cancers in a rural area - A two year study
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: Oral cancer is one of the ten most common cancers in the world and in India it is one of the top five leading cancers in either gender. It can be easily detected at an early stage with careful clinical examination and is amenable to prevention. Aim of the Study: To study the clinical presentation and histopathological features of oral cancers over a two year period. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study carried out in the department of Pathology at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, (MGIMS) Sevagram, over two years. A total of 140 adult patients with histologically confirmed oral cancers were studied for clinical presentation, demographic details including occupation and education, anatomical location of tumor and for histopathological findings. Results: Oral cancers were common in males and in middle age individuals. The most common site was buccal mucosa (32.2%) followed by floor of mouth. Clinically most common presentation was of an ulceroproliferative growth followed by non-healing ulcer presentation. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common histologic type. Conclusion: Oral cancers are common in rural areas and are most frequently seen in middle aged male patients and often present as nonhealing ulcers. Awareness among general population leading to early detection is important for prevention of this deadly cancer.
