Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Oral cavity is the commonest site for tumors and tumor like lesions. Tobacco chewing/smoking, alcohol and ill-fitting dentures are associated with oral cavity tumors. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most-commonest carcinoma of the mouth that affect the tongue, buccal mucosa, lips and gingiva. Methods: This study included 109 cases of premalignant, benign and malignant lesions of oral cavity. The study was carried out in the Department of Pathology, RIMS, Raichur, Karnataka, for a period of three years from January 2016 to December 2018. Results: In the present study among 109 cases, 67cases (61.4%) were malignant, 29 cases (26. 6%) were benign and 13 cases (12%) were premalignant. The age range was from 6 to 74 years with a mean age of 40 years. The most common age group that was affected was between 41- 50 years (44 cases, 40. 3%). Premalignant and malignant lesions of oral cavity were more commonly seen in males (78 cases; 71%) than in females (22 cases; 28.5%) with M: F of 3.5:1. The most common site affected was the buccal mucosa 47.9% (52 out of 109) for malignant lesions. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most-commonest carcinoma (found in 100% of malignant lesions). Conclusion: In present study, predominant oral cavity lesions were malignant, squamous cell carcinoma was the commonest histological tumor. Buccal mucosa was the most-commonest site for premalignant and neoplastic lesions of oral cavity. Histopathological study plays a crucial role in confirming the diagnosis of Oral cavity lesions and it also aids in early recognition and its management.
