Fine needle aspiration cytology and histopathological correlation of head and neck lesions

Abstract
Background: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has been gaining importance as a result of its cheap cost, easy performance, safety, with fair specificity and specificity especially in terms of sorting out malignant cases. The differential diagnosis of a head and neck swelling covers a broad spectrum of disease with differing implications for management. The nature of lesion will determine whether patient can be managed non-operatively or has to be subjected to a major surgical procedure.Objectives: To evaluate diagnostic efficacy of FNAC in the head and neck lesions and correlate it with histopathology and analyze the various neoplastic and non neoplastic conditions, including the demographic profile.Materials and Methods: It is a study of 100 cases of head and neck area referred to the Department of Pathology, KVG medical college and hospital, Sullia (DK). The cytological diagnosis was compared with histopathology. The false positive/negative data was analyzed to calculate the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and diagnostic accuracy of the study.Results: The study included 100 cases between 6-80 yrs in which 72% were females and 28% were males. Maximum numbers of cases were from thyroid, 63 (63%). The overall accuracy was 96% with sensitivity of 81.81% and specificity of 100%. Positive and negative predictive values were 100% and 95.12% respectively.Conclusion: FNAC is a simple, safe, cost effective and accurate method for detecting various head and neck lesions with a very high sensitivity and specificity. Thus, it can be used as an initial investigation for routine screening of head and neck lesions
