Cognitive functioning and myofacial pain in masticatory organ dysfunction
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2018, Vol 71, Issue 3
Abstract
Introduction: A physical examination of the patients suffering from the masticatory organ dysfunctions is increasingly accompanied by monitoring of their psychological functioning. It includes basic diagnostics of the emotional and motivational sphere as well as, although rarely, the social sphere. Analysis of the pain profile, which changes under the influence of the therapeutic process, and which takes into account the psychoneurophysiological aspect of the phenomenon, suggests the need to extend the scope of assessment. Cognitive functioning, whose specific aspects are covered in the described research, includes mental activities that allow to create and modify knowledge about the environment, such as perception, memory, attention, and the ability to control one's own reactions. Aim of the study: The aim of this article is to describe the specificity of cognitive functioning of the patients suffering from masticatory organ dysfunctions at various stages of prosthetic treatment, in which particular emphasis is placed on experienced pain. Material and methods: The study included 45 patients, where 23 patients were diagnosed with painful form of functional masticatory organ disorders in the form of myofacial pain, and 22 patients were diagnosed with functional dysfunctions showing the same pathomechanism, but these patients did not report pain. Scheduled analysis included a number of inter-group comparisons based on data obtained using selected psychological tests and neuropsychological clinical trials. Results: Statistically significant differences in cognitive functioning of the patients suffering from masticatory organ dysfunctions and experiencing pain and those patients who did not experience pain were observed. Summary: In the context of knowledge of neurophysiological mechanisms of myofacial pain in the course of masticatory organ dysfunction, it is important to take into account the psychological functioning of patients in a broader sense.
