Combustion Properties of Hydrogen-Enriched Methane in Micro-Power Plants

Abstract
In view of the problem of combustion instability in the the micro homogeneous charge compression ignition ( HCCI) free-piston power plant, the combustion propery of hydroge-enriched methane in a cylindrical micro-combustor was investigated. The chemical reaction mechanism of the space gas phase of hydrogenenriched methane combustion was confirmed, and the three-dimensional model was established for the free piston power plant. The combustion process between hydrogen-enriched methane and air in the micro combustor was numerically simulated by using Fluent software based on experiments. The effects of hydrogen ratio on the ignition limit, ignition time, ignition process and critical burning energy of the critical combustion were studied. The combustion property of fuel mixtures with different hydrogen ratios were analyzed. The results show that while the mole raito is 0. 5, the ignition limit of compression ignition gas can be widened by adding hydrogen. The reliability of ignition and combustion is improved and the ignition time is advanced. Because the heat value of hydrogen is far lower than that of methane, the doing work of piston is decreased with the increase of hydrogen blending ratio. When the hydrogen blending ratio is within the range of 10% to 20%, the HCCI free-piston power plant has stable combustion performance and high doing work performance.
