Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pharmacology - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: Among different disorders of the gastrointestinal system, the gastric ulcer is the one which is more prevalent and have a greatest clinical impact. The most commonly used as anti-ulcer drugs are H-2 blockers (ranitidine etc) and proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole etc). Recently, medicinal herbs and traditional preparations in Siddha have gained importance as alternative medicine because of their wide applications and fewer side effects. Aim: To compare antiulcer effects of all opathic medicine (omeprazole) with two Siddha drugs – astathychooranam and sanguparpam in the management of gastric ulcer. Materials andmethods: A hospital-basedcase-controlled study was conducted for a period of 1 year [2014-1015] in medicine OPD of Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital. A total number of 40 subjects were included in this study. Among them, 22 subjects were randomized to group A and 18subjects were selected to group B. Group A was with omeprazole 20mg twice daily before food and group B with astathy chooranam 1 gm and sangu parpam 200 mg twice daily with honey before food. The results were analyzed and compared. Results: After 45 days of treating symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea were completely relieved for group Asubjects except for one case. Among 18 subjects with group B above symptoms were completely relieved for15subjects and three 3 had only minimal improvement. Out of treated subjects in the group A, 12 subjects had a good appetite and the rest of the subjects have a subnormalappetite and in group B, 14 subjects had good appetite and rest of the subjects had a subnormal appetite. Conclusion: The herbal and traditional preparations used in the Siddha medicine are shown to have antiulcer activity as compared to the allopathic medicine. However, more studies regarding the standardization, safety, and efficacy of these drugs need to be conducted for the wider global application.
