Comparative Study of Shouldice Repair and Lichenstein Mesh Repair for Inguinal Hernia

Abstract

Aim The study is aimed to compare shouldice repair and Lichenstein repair in terms of safety, cost effectiveness, hospital stay, recurrence rate, post-operative pain and infection. Materials and Methods Retrospective study of 100 patients undergone surgery between 2012 January to 2014 August. Results One recurrence was seen in each group of patients. Superficial wound infection was seen in two patients of Lichenstein group and one patient in the shouldice repair group. Post-operative pain was present for 3 days in shouldice repair and for 2 days in mesh repair group. Conclusion Both the surgeries are comparable and safe and the rate of recurrence is same in groups and infection rate found to be more in mesh repair patient. Study shows postoperative pain is lees in mesh repair as compared to shoulder repair.
