CONSERVATION OF THE WILD FAUNA OF MADRE DE DIOS: A REFLECTION IN TIMES OF PANDEMIC

Journal Title: Innova Biology Sciences - Year 2021, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The objective of this research work was to show a reflective overview of the importance of conserving wildlife in Madre de Dios for the preservation of ecosystems. For this, a descriptive and participatory research was carried out through a bibliometric review using the Web of Science, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar databases from the last five years, in addition to communication via email with two NGOs in the region. The investigation showed that the direct threat to biological diversity in the region is the illegal wildlife trade, as well as hunting and smuggling. Such activities have continued during the COVID-19 pandemic; for this reason, The Government offered an economic subsidy to the conservation centers that carry out captive breeding and training for the authorities, in order to strengthen actions against the illegal trafficking of species. On the other hand, the two NGOs interviewed stated that they had stopped their main activities, such as the monitoring of biological diversity and the rehabilitation of wildlife, in addition to their concern about the loss of wildlife and damage to the ecosystem. It was concluded that the conservation of wildlife must be prioritized and carried out jointly with the local populations that, for the most part, carry out illegal trade to improve their living conditions.
