MEDICINAL PLANTS USED FOR PREVENTION PURPOSES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN PERU: A REVIEW

Journal Title: Innova Biology Sciences - Year 2021, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

To date, 1,400 species of plants for medicinal use have been reported, which, despite time, maintain their effectiveness and are accepted by 80% of the population. In the face of the pandemic, the use of different types of plants with antiviral potential has been resorted to in order to protect and stimulate the immune system. Despite the fact that conventional medicine has made great advances, there is still a large part of the population that uses medicinal plants, a fact that has become more evident in the last two years. Different molecular coupling studies of medicinal plant species have been reported, such as Allium sativum, which have great potential to inhibit SARS-CoV-2; however, it is necessary to carry out more in vitro and in vivo tests to determine its potential. In that context, The present investigation seeks to explore the potentialities of the so-called medicinal plants with respect to viral respiratory diseases; and COVID-19 is taken as a case study. For this, a bibliometric review was carried out in the Scopus, PudMed, Scielo, Sciencedirect and Web of Science databases, using keywords such as herbal medicine, COVID-19, ethnobotany and traditional medicine.
