Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2019, Vol 35, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The aim of this work was the assessment of the influence of implementing corrective strategies and functional training according to the Functional Movement System approach on the improvement of functional capacity in professional soccer players. Material and methods. Twenty players and 30 people undertaking recreational physical activity were assessed by the application of the Functional Movement Screen. Corrective strategies based on the Functional Movement Screen score were planned for a group of soccer players for a period of one month. Results. The result of FMS conducted before the implementation of the corrective strategies was almost 2 points higher for the soccer players in comparison with the control group. After introducing the corrective strategies the result of the test for the soccer players was 18.2 points and it was higher than before the implementation of corrective exercises (17.4 points). The amount of points obtained in the test by the players undergoing corrective exercises was higher in comparison with the sportsman to whom corrective exercises were not applied and constituted 18.2 and 17.2 points accordingly. Conclusions. The application of appropriate corrective training methods based on the Functional Movement System concept to typical soccer trainings may substantially increase functional performance of athletes, simultaneously decreasing the risk of injury. Typical training units do not affect the improvement of abnormal global movement patterns, however, increase the risk of injury in soccer players.
