Cytological Diagnosis Of Adult Filarial Worm In Aspirate From A Cystic Breast Lump.

Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 1

Abstract

Filariasis is a tropical disease transmitted by the Culex mosquitoes. Its diagnosis is conventionally made by demonstrating microfilariae in the peripheral blood smear. However; microfilariae and adult filarial worm have been incidentally detected in fine needle aspirates of various lesions in clinically unsuspected cases. Here, we report a unique case in which aspiration cytology from a breast lump clinically suspicious of fibroadenoma of the breast, showed adult filarial worms with numerous microfilariae. Although not so common, filariasis should be considered as one of the differential diagnosis of a superficial swelling particularly if clear fluid is obtained on FNAC. Careful screening of smears plays a significant role in recognition of the disease even in asymptomatic patients.
