Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction : Cysticercosis is a systemic parasitic infection caused by pork tapeworm,Taenia solium. Symptoms of illness are caused by development of cyst but many individuals do not experience any symptoms.Cardiac involvement in cysticercosis is extremely rare, but autopsy studies have shown prevalence of 20-25% in patient with concomitant documented neurocysticercosis. Case report : A 24 year male presented with history of giddiness, chest pain and followed by death. Multiple organs were received for autopsy examination to ascertain cause of death. On examination, brain and heart shows presence of cysticercosis. Discussion : Cysticercosis is zoonotic larval cestoda infection endemic in Central and South America, Sub-saharan Africa, India, Asia. In India, it is highly prevalent in Northern states. Undercooked pork, eggs of tapeworm entering the body through feco-oral route is source of infection. It is caused by dissemination of embryos of Taenia solium from the intestine via the hepatoportal system to the tissues and organs of body. It is preventable and treatable condition that can cause severe neurologic disease and death and result in substantial cost to the healthcare system. Conclusion : Although any organ or tissue can house the cysticercosis, most commonly affecting CNS, involvement of heart is very rare, but it is seen in our case. The aim of this presentation is to report the rare case.
