Abstract
[b]Introduction: [/b]Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)is a myeloid neoplastic disorder characterized by morphologic and cytogenetic alterations,and by the expression of immunologic markers,thus,it was extremely important for our hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe Medellín-Colombia to describe this characteristics and their presentation frequency of is patients with the diagnosis of AML.[b]Materials and Methods: [/b]Descriptive and retrospective study based on the application of a form to the clinical charts and the results of the clinical laboratory.Microsoft Excel 2002 and SPSS v13 were used to analyze data.[b]Results: [/b]Out of 71 reviewed clinical charts, only 40 completed inclusion criteria.55%(22)were women and 45% (18)were men.The median of age was 57 years.The more frequent FAB-subtype was M5,in 22.5%(9).The cytogenetic study was performed to 52.5%(21)patients.According to the WHO classifications, 15%(6)of the patients belonged to Group I;10%(4)to Group II,to group III 2.5%(1)and the rest,72.5%(29)to group IV.There were 3 cases of biphenotipic leukemia.There was anemia in 100%(40),leucocytosis in a 42.5 (17),leucopenia in 30%(12)and thrombocytopenia in 92.5%(37)of the patients.[b]Conclusions: [/b]In the population attended at Our Hospital,we found that AML was more frequent in female adults;most of them presented bi or pancytopenia at the moment of diagnosis.The existence of chromosomal alterations was observed in patients mainly from the urban area.
