Prevalence of cervical dysplasias in patients with human papilomavirus infection. Chile

Journal Title: Ciencia e Investigación Médica Estudiantil Latinoamericana - Year 2006, Vol 11, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction:The screening programs for the Cervical Cancer prevention had reducing significantly its incidence and mortality, being the cervical cytology or Papanicolau the method more utilized in the world. Furthermore, there are more methods with most sensibility and specificity, but there are more expensive. One of those are the Hybrid Capture, who categorize the viral strains according to oncogenic potential. The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence of cervical dysplasias in patients with a HPV infection, those age distribution and oncogenic potential of the viral strains. Material and methods: It was reviewed 274 biopsies of uterine cervix results with the histopathologic diagnosis of HPV infection, between January, 2003 and September, 2005, of the Anatomopathology Service of the Almirante Nef ‘s Navy Hospital of Viña del Mar. It was registered name, age, histopathologic diagnosis, hybrid capture and its results. Results: The prevalence of cervical dysplasias in patients with HPV infection was of 45.25%. The distribution of cervical dysplasias was Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (SIL) I 48,28%, SIL II 27,8%, SIL III 23,76%. The age prevalence was higher between 15 and 29 years. Conclusions: It observed more frequency of biopsies without a Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion in the high oncogenic risk HPV group, for that we propose to use Hybrid Capture as a complement to the screening program, for a better coverage of the most risk patients.
