Detection of Treponema pallidum among Couples Planning To Marry In Baqubah City, Iraq

Abstract

Syphilis is one of the most important disease transmit sexually by Treponema pallidum. It can also be transmitted by blood transfusion or vertically. Screening blood widely used and necessary to prevent several blood borne microbial infections among general population especially in blood donations, before surgery and before marry. Objectives: To determine the infection rate of Treponema pallidum among couples planning to marry in Baqubah city. Patients and methods: A cross-sectional study of 15135 couples planning to marry age 20-70 years, attending to Baqubah Teaching Hospital- Blood Bunk, Iraq, during the period from first of January 2017 till end of December 2017. All subjects were tested for the presence of Treponema pallidum antibody by use enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Age and gender were collected from each participant and arranged in specific formula sheet. Result: Blood screening results showed 22 out of 15135 were positive for syphilis, high percent of infection were recorded in January 5 cases (0.34%), followed by August 4(0.22%) and November 3(0.27%) while no positive cases were occurred in May and June. Males had significantly higher than females, p < 0.0001. The relationship between the positivity to syphilis infection and age group revealed that high percentage of infection were noticed in age group over 50 years followed by (20-30) years, but it was non- significant. Conclusion: Syphilis had a relatively low percentage in Iraq comparing with other countries, infection more common in males and age group over 50 years; these common sexually transmit infections that induce economical and psychological outcome.
