DETERMINATION OF LATERITE ELUVIUM THICKNESS AND DEPTH OF GROUND WATERS OCCURRENCE IN KIBEHO (RWANDA) USING VERTICAL ELECTRICAL SOUNDING METHOD

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2011, Vol 446, Issue 446

Abstract

Determination of thickness of a laterite eluvium and evaluation of hydrogeological conditions in the neighbourhood of Kibeho (Rwanda) were described in the paper. The problem was undertaken for further infrastructure development for the extension of the Marian Sanctuary. This is the fi rst study of this type in the Kibeho area. The aim of the work was to determine the depth of the rock bed and ground water table for foundation purposes. The water is necessary for supplying local population and pilgrims visiting the Sanctuary in Kibeho. To realize the aim, the geophysical method (VES – vertical electrical sounding) was used. The hydrogeological observations and measurements as well as the analysis of an archival data were done.
