DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF ORALLY DISINTEGRATING TABLETS OF METOPROLOL TARTRATE BY DIRECT COMPRESSION METHOD USING DIFFERENT DILUENTS

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Pharmacy (IRJP) - Year 2011, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

The objective of the present investigation was to prepare orally disintegrating tablets of metoprolol tartrate by direct compression method using different concentration of cross povidone as super disintegrants and different diluents. ,Diluents are inactive substance used as carrier for the active ingredients .In the present work, an attempt as been made to prepare tablets with different diluents mannitol, spray dried lactose and di-basic calcium phosphate at different concentration. Orally disintegrating tablet is the fast growing and highly accepted drug delivery system, convenience of self administration, compactness and easy manufacturing. Metoprolol tartrate is an antihypertensive agent, half life is 3 hrs and bioavailability is 40%. It is completely absorb after oral administration. The blend was examined for angle of repose, bulk density, tapped density, compressibility index and Hausner’s ratio. The tablets were evaluated for thickness, hardness, friability, and weight variation, content uniformity, wetting time, Water absorption ratio, in-vitro dispersion time, dissolution studies and FTIR studies. Twelve formulations F1 to F12 were prepared with cross povidone as a super disintegrants and three different diluents with different concentration. The optimum formulation was chosen and their optimum results were found to be in close agreement with experimental finding.
