Diagnostic accuracy and efficacy of fine needle aspiration cytology of thyroid lesions and its cyto-histopathological correlation
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 3
Abstract
Thyroid swellings are a significant clinical problem in the general population. Pre-operative distinction of benign lesions is of paramount importance to avoid unnecessary surgery as majority of them are non-neoplastic which do not require surgery. Present study was conducted to study Cytomorphology and Cyto-histopathological correlation wherever possible and to evaluate diagnostic accuracy of FNAC. Present study was conducted in Pathology Department of LSGGG Hospital Jamnagar, Saurashtra region in which 268 cases of thyroid lesions were studied. In 268 cases FNAC smears were studied Cyto-histopathological correlation of 90 cases was done. In present study sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and efficacy were 85.7%, 96.1%, 80%, 97.3%, 94.4% respectively. FNAC is a safe, simple, rapid and fairly accurate method for the diagnosis of thyroid lesions. It is superior to other investigations like USG and thyroid function tests in diagnosis of thyroid lesions.
