Diagnostic role of FNAC in metastatic lymphadenopathies – Our institutional experience
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: FNAC is a reliable and inexpensive diagnostic tool which plays an important role in the identification of metastatic lymphadenopathies. It gives the clue regarding the origin of primary tumor. The aim of this study is to detect metastasis in lymphnodes by FNAC. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was carried out in the Department of Pathology at our institution over a period of 2 years from May 2016 to May 2018. The study was done on all metastatic lesions in the lymph nodes reported. Results: During our study period, a total of 450 cases of lymphnode aspirates were done, out of which 95 cases were positive for metastasis. Cervical lymph node was the most common site affected. The most common age group of occurrence being 41-50years. Squamous cell carcinoma being the most common malignancy reported followed by mammary duct carcinoma metastasis. In 20 out of 95 cases, histopathological follow up and confirmation was available with 100% diagnostic accuracy. Conclusion: Fine needle aspiration cytology is a simple and useful diagnostic tool with good accuracy in the evaluation of metastatic lymphadenopathy.
