DIETARY BEHAVIOURS AND BODY IMAGE PERCEPTION IN YOUTH FEMALE BALLET DANCERS

Abstract

[b]Background. [/b]The aim of the paper was to eyaluate basie dietary behayiours and body image perception in female ballet school pupils.[b]Materiał and methods.[/b] The sample comprised 123 female pupils of ballet schools in Les-ser Poland (Małopolska), assigned to two age groups: 9-13 years (57subjects) and 14-18 years (66 subjects). The sun/ey was conducted by means of a diagnostic poll using a tailored quest-ionnaire.[b]Results.[/b] Basic dietary errors of the female ballet school pupils include: insufficient number of meals and irregular meal consumption, freauent eating between meals (also sweets), lack of dairy products, yegetables and fruit in eyeryday diet as well as Iow fish consumption. It was shown that some dietary habits of the studied girls differed by age. Younger girls reported morę regular meal consumption - 3 meals daily (p<0.01) including breakfast (p<0.001) and morę freauent consumption of fish (p<0.05). The girls aged 14-18 morę often report dietary errors, such as eating between meals (p<0.01), lack of fruit in their eyeryday diet (p<0.01), regular consumption of sweets and confectionery products (p<0.05) as well as morę freauent consumption of pork (p<0.01) and fast foods (p<0.05). The results also indicate distorted perception of body shape and weight by the subjects and morę freauent acceptance of own bodies in older girls (26.3% vs 9.1%; p<0.05).[b]Conclusions.[/b] The reported dietary errors and distorted own body perception, depending on age, indicate the need of nutritional disorder prophylaxis among the studied population.
