Journal Title: International Research Journal of Pharmacy (IRJP) - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 7
Abstract
The liver is among the most complex and important organs in the human body. Its primary function is to control the flow and safety of substances absorbed from the digestive system before distribution of these substances to the systemic circulatory system. Hepatotoxicity implies chemical-driven liver damage. Chemicals that cause liver injury are called hepatotoxins. Hepatic injury leads to disturbances in transport function of hepatocytes resulting in leakage of plasma membrane thereby causing an increased enzyme level in serum. There are many diseases that are related with hepatotoxicity caused by certain chemicals or hepatotoxins. Herbal medicines are great demand in various chemicals and drugs disordered hepatic, the developed world for primary health care because of their efficacy, safety, lesser side effects and narrow therapeutic window. This review focus on liver, its function, liver diseases and different models of hepatotoxicity.
