Differentiation of the magnitudes of parameters characterizing the effectiveness of low starts in people with different levels of efficiency

Journal Title: Rozprawy Naukowe Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu - Year 2007, Vol 25, Issue 1

Abstract

The purpose of our work was the comparison of the magnitudes of rebound forces (for the rear and front leg) occurring on block supports, response time, starting acceleration and speed on the running start and during the initial part of sprint racing in subjects showing different levels of efficiency. It was assumed that the average values of all parameters characterizing the effectiveness of low start would be higher in the group of athletes than in the group of students. The tests were performed on 26 subjects divided into two groups. The first group consisted of 10 athletes, members of the athletic club AZS AWF Wroclaw. The age of the subjects ranged from 20 to 34 years. The second group involved 16 randomly selected students in the 2nd year at the University School of Physical Education in Wroclaw. They were aged 20–22 years. The data collected were processed by means of basic statistical methods and their basic numerical characteristics. In order to compare the average results obtained by the sprinters’ and students’ groups, the t-Student test for independent populations was used. With the tests performed and the analysis of the material, the following observations were made: 1. Average values of maximum take-off forces from the starting block supports as well as speeds and starting accelerations were higher in the group of athletes than in the group of students. 2. The only parameter which did not differentiate the groups at different levels of sprinter’s efficiency was the response time for the starting impulse.
