Distribution of ABO and Rhesus blood groups in blood donors at blood bank of tertiary care hospital, Mahabubnagar, Telangana

Abstract

Background: Blood groups of population are determined genetically by the presence of specific antigens on the erythrocytes (Red blood cells). Blood group antigens are inherited in a mendelian fashion and appear early in fetal life and remain unchanged till death. Aim: This study was aimed to identify the distribution patterns of ABO and Rhesus (Rh) D blood groups among the blood donors attending at Blood bank, Government General Hospital, in order to promote social awareness and safe blood transfusion among the population. So retrospective study was conducted during the 2‑year period from January 2016 to December 2017. Materials and Methods: The blood collections were taken from the voluntary donors at outdoor blood donation camp and in house blood bank as well as from replacement donors at blood bank. All were of age between 18 and 60 years. After blood donation, blood group was determined by forward blood grouping (cell grouping) and Reverse blood grouping (serum grouping) by test tube agglutination method. The donor blood group data were recorded on specially formed proforma, tabulated and analyzed. Results: Of 3869 donors, percentage of ABO blood groups in donors in descending order was as follows: O>B>A>AB. Out of which, 1729 (44.6%) were of blood group O, 1163 (30.05 %) of B, 640 (16.5 %) of A and 337 (8.7 %) were of blood group AB. Incidence of Rh-D positive was 87.98 % (3404) and Rh-D negative was 12.01 % (465). Out of the total donors, males were 3676 (95%) and 193(5%) subjects were females.
