DISTURBANCES OF PERCEPTION IN PATIENTS TREATED OPERATIVELY BECAUSE OF IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS

Abstract
Introduction. Little is known about changes in sensory perception of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis who underwent the surgical correction of spinal curvature. Aim. The aim of the study was assessment of the sensory perception disturbances before and after surgery of patients treated because of the right thoracic idiopathic scoliosis with methods of intensity of current versus stimulus duration (IC-SD). Materials and Methods. There were recognised King and Moe type II scoliosis in examined patients. Studies were performed before surgery in 14 patients with the main angle of thoracic scoliosis curvature from 20° to 52° (mean of 48°) at T8-T9, the duration of postoperative observation lasted two years in 12 patients. Two patients denied of the final comparative examination after surgery. Results. In preoperative examination we found the greatest loss of the sensory perception on the concave side of the thoracic dermatomes, and to the less degree in area of the calf, than in the area of the dorsal part of the foot, in the area of thigh and in the paravertebral area at the lumbar level, respectively. The range of sensory perception was 3 in average preoperatively and 4 at average postoperatively in a scale from 1 to 5. Significant changes in the sensory perception at the thoracic level of the concave side of scoliosis are not caused mainly by thoracosurgery. Conclusions. The surgical correction of the main thoracic curvature with Cotrel-Dubousset method improves not only the afferent spinal transmission but also the disturbed the sensory perception 2 years in postoperative observation.
