Abstract
Based on archival documents investigated the activities of the city government in Volyn in the early twentieth century. Found out their role in socio-economic processes taking place in the region in the study period. During the study significant attention devoted to budget analysis of the studied cities. Analyzes their main source of income and expenditures. The role of municipal government in the construction of power plants in the towns of Volyn in the early twentieth century. Important note given control of the administrative authorities of the activities of city government. Analyzed a number Volyn governor orders that regulate their activities. It was found the process of regulation of working hours of employees in craft workshops and private enterprises on the part of city government. The features of urban land transfer to entrepreneurs and other categories of urban rent. The role of city government to issue commercial patents and certificates that give the right residents of cities engaged in handicrafts. The study of these documents helped to explore not only the number of merchants and artisans in the investigated localities of the province, but also to clarify their ethnicity. Overall archival documents that reflect the role of municipal government is a valuable source of research the history of cities in the region in the early twentieth century
