DYNAMICS OF FAMILY AND MARITAL RELATIONS AS A FACTOR OF A RATIONALE FOR ANNUAL INTERIM ASSESSMENT OF FOSTER CHILDCARE

Abstract

The article covers various aspects of the married couples’ interaction under the conditions of long-term foster family experience (up to 8 years). The dynamics of marital relations is analyzed according to the age groups, experience of family life, and foster parenting duration. It has been found that the foster parenthood status position leads to revision of the internal family interaction processes. According to the age and length of foster parenthood, the parallel processes have been identified specified by the increased focus on the married couples’ interaction and status positions of father and mother. According to the length of marriage, the dynamics indicators of the couples’ interaction turned out to be overloaded with the issues of harmonization of personal achievements and social life benefits. It has been proved that acquiring the foster parent’s status by the spouses initiates the dynamics of reallocation of their roles and status and powers, strengthens the mechanisms of projection and identification in relations, promotes changes in the balance of components of gender presentations by foster parents in social interaction (gender-neutral, feminine and masculine). In mutual perception of the couple, there have been identified the processes of distortions in terms of the power and subordination parameters, which may work for the benefit of merger or differentiation of the family system. The study shows that the identified tendencies are formed on the basis of social influences, thus confirming the fact of primacy of social influence in the emotional exchange. The foster parenthood as a form of child protection implemented by accepting a child into one’s own family has been proved to be a care that has therapeutic effects for the foster parents themselves. The long term performance of the foster parenting functions by adults causes revision of the early childhood guidance, thus enhancing the processes of self-perception and lowering the restrictive guidance that have been accepted in early childhood; initiates the processes of release from the mutual dependence relationships increasing the tendency to exercise their own initiatives. The described changes to the systemic parameters of a foster family make it not identical according to its terms of service. This raises the issue of the need for an annual assessment of the families’ operation compliance with the child protection task. The assessment of family functioning should be based on the ethics of social work and observing the right to privacy of family life.
