Effect of ciprofloxacin: A fluoroquinolone drug on psychomotor performance tests and blood sugar level in healthy humans

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pharmacology - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Fluoroquinolones are widely used for infections butcan affect psychomotor function. Ciprofloxacin is known to cause anxiety, impairment of concentration, abnormal vision. Previous studies indicated a relationship between fluoroquinolones and dysglycemia, which includes hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. Hence, this study was planned in healthy human volunteers to determine the effect of ciprofloxacin on psychomotor performance (using both subjective and objective tests) and simultaneously on blood sugar. Material and Methods: The study was randomized, prospective, double blind, crossover, placebo controlled single dose study carried out in 15 healthy volunteers. Single oral doses of ciprofloxacin 500 mg and placebo were administered following a Latin square design. The objective parameters and subjective parameters were tested at 0, 2 and 4 hr. Blood sugar level was tested 2 hr after each drug administration. Results: Ciprofloxacin doesn’t show any effect on psychomotor performance tests. Anxiety was increased significantly at 2 hr and 4 hr and dullness at 4 hr. 13.34% subjects reported headache. There was no any effect on blood sugar level. Discussion: Single dose ciprofloxacin doesn’t have effect on objective tests of psychomotor performance, but it can cause significant anxiety and dullness on visual analogue scale. There was no deterioration of blood sugar level after single dose administration of ciprofloxacin.
