Effect of Crocus Sativus (Saffron) on Patients Suffering from Chemotherapy-Induced Painful Peripheral Neuropathy in Semnan Kosar Hospital

Abstract

Background and Objective: One of the most important side effects of chemotherapy drugs is peripheral neuropathy, which is characterized by symptoms such as numbness, paresthesia, dysstasy, tingling or numbness of the limbs, especially the legs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of crocin (saffron) tablets on painful chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in cancer patients. Materials and Methods: The present study was a pilot double-blind randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial on 10 patients over 25 years age those who suffering from peripheral neuropathy caused by chemotherapy (IRCT approval code: IRCT20180119038433N1, Ethics committee in Semnan University of Medical Sciences: IR.SEMUMS.REC.1397.195). 5 patients received 15 mg/day of Crocin tablets daily for 6 weeks and 5 patients received placebo tablets daily for 6 weeks. Patients had moderate to severe painful neuropathy for at least one month with mean daily pain ranging from 0 to 10 [at least 4 on the NRS scale]. Results: For individuals receiving Crocin, we reported a mean decrease in average pain of 1.3 (95% CI, 0.62- 1.30) vs 0.44 (95% CI, 0.02-0.76) among those who received placebo (P=.002; effect size, 0.623). The observed mean difference in the average pain score between Crocin and placebo was 0.83 (95% CI, 0.36- 1.20). Conclusion: Among patients with painful CIPN, the use of Crocin compared with placebo for 6 weeks resulted in a greater reduction in pain.
