Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 5, Issue 9
Abstract
One of the major effective factors in educational dynamics and achievement of students is their mental health. Based on this, the present study was carried out in 2012 aiming at determining the factors effective in mental health of students of Islamic Azad University of Zanjan. In this descriptive-analytic study, 670 freshmen were selected randomly. The related information was collected using GHQ-28 general health questionnaire and personal information questionnaire. The data were analyzed using chi-square, Fisher’s exact test, analysis of variance, and multivariate logistic regression with the significance level of 0.05. Based on the results, we studied 188 (28%) male students and 482 (72%) female students with the mean age of 22.4 ± 3.44 years old. The total score of general health of students was based on 23 cut-off points. Totally, 27.4% (separated by gender, 30.2% male students, and 26.5% female students) had unusual score. According to the results, the maximum percentage of unusual score was calculated, which was related to the social function disorders (36.9%). The final study on the relationships between variables in the presence of all variables showed that the relationships between mental health of students (P=0.03) and gender (P=0.02) and economic condition of families (P=0.001) were significant. According to the results of the present study on mental health of the freshmen, it is necessary to activate Student Counseling Centers to help the vulnerable groups.
