Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. During menopause estrogen produced by the ovaries decreases, leading to many symptoms of tissue that is richly equipped with estrogen receptor. Oral and vaginal mucosa show similarities in terms of construction and changes in both epithelia during menopause. Aim of the study. To assess the impact of menopausal hormone therapy on the estrogen receptor β expression in the epithelium of oral and vaginal mucosa in women during menopause.Material and methods. A group of 60 women were subjected to menopausal hormone therapy, oral, transdermal, and vaginal, which rated Erβ expression levels in the epithelium of oral and vaginal mucosa. Results. The highest increase in the receptor expression in oral mucosa occurred in patients using oral and transdermal therapies, and in the epithelium of vaginal mucosa in patients who underwent local therapy. Conclusion. The studies indicated that menopausal complaints are the indication for hormone therapy.
