Implantoprothetic treatment of patient with manifestation of osteoporosis in mandible. A case report

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction. Osteoporosis is causing excessive loss of bone minerals within skeleton and jaws. It leads to a considerable reduction of patients prosthetic foundation and as a result to a complicated rehabilitation of masticatory organ. Therefore patients with osteoporosis often require modified treatment procedures including dental implants. However, the use of implants in treatment of patients with compromised and deficient bone is still unreliable. The aim of study was to present the treatment outcome of a female patient with osteoporosis with the use of dental implants to fix prosthetic appliances. Material and methods. Patient aged 83 with osteoporosis (BMD≤-2,5), prosthetic foundation resorption and masticatory organon deflected function unrestored with conventional prosthesis at satisfied level, was qualified for implantoprothetic treatment in mandible. Modified surgical preparation at implant site protocol appropriate for reduced density of bone was used. New prosthesis were made: a conventional upper one and lower overdenture with a cast enforcement and titanic superstructures. A clinical evaluation revealed superior stabilization and retention of lower implant supported overdenture prosthesis and improvement of functional efficiency of the masticatory organ. The use of implantoprothetic treatment of patients with osteoporosis, deflected prosthetic foundation usually require modified protocols to achieve an optimal results.
