Relationship between personality type and TMD
Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2011, Vol 61, Issue 3
Abstract
Introduction. Psychological factors play an important role in TMD aetiology. It is particularly associated with the increased pace of life and capability to cope with stress.Aim of the study. 1. To define the TMD range using subjective indexes: Helkimo Ai, Gsellmann Occlusal Index and clinical Helkimo Di. 2. To evaluate the influence of Friedmann’s personality type on TMD symptoms. 3. To assess the relationship between personality type and unilateral mastication. 4. To asses the effect of life events on TMD occurrence.Materials and methods. Investigations were carried out in 74 patients (63 women and 11 men) aged 21–55. Patients filled in a questionnaire assessing their behaviour in specific life situations. On this basis the patients were classified into personality groups of type A and B and of mixed type A/B. The results were compared with Helkimo Ai, Di and Occlusal Index.Results. The correlation between personality type and Helkimo Ai was evidenced. Ai=1 occurs more frequently in patients with mixed type A/B; Ai=0 in patients with type B; and patients with personality type A showed a higher Occlusal Index. The relationship between personality type and unilateral mastication was found more frequently in patients with mixed type of personality A/B. Correlation was revealed neither between personality type and gender nor between personality type and clenching, grinding and nonocclusal parafunctions. The life events index had no effect on the increase in TMD symptoms.Conclusions. 1. Patients with personality types A and A/B were more exposed to TMD than those with the type B personality. 2. Unilateral mastication was more frequently found in patients with mixed personality type A/B. 3. The life events index had no effect on the increase in TMD symptoms in the examined group.
