Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has recently become one of standard options of bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of LSG and impact of weight loss on improving in terms of co-morbidities. We report our early experience regarding to this procedure.Material and methods. A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for obesity between January and July 2010 was conducted. Data included patient demographics, operative data, complications rates, weight loss results and co-morbidities rates before and after procedure were collected.Results. Between January and July 2010, 18 patients with obesity underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. The mean age was 44 ± 11 years (range 25-60). The initial mean weight was 127 ± 18 kg with BMI 43.2 ± 4.4 kg/m2. The average %EWL was 40.9 ± 10.4 and average %EBMIL was 47.1 ± 13.1 at 3 months follow-up. No mortality was observed. There were no major complications. The minor complication occurred in 1 patient (5.5%) – one port site infection. The average operating time was 138.3 ± 25 min. The mean length of hospital stay was 5.5 ± 1 days. Complete remission of hypertension was observed in 11 of 18 patients (61.1%) and diabetes mellitus in 6 of 11 patients (54.5%) at 3 months follow-up.Conclusion. Proper evaluation to surgery, modification of medical treatment before the procedure and careful follow-up, especially during intensive weight loss, reduces the rates of complications after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy can be introduced with success into a center with a great experience in laparoscopic digestive surgery. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy ensures a good weight loss and improved weight-related co-morbidities in short term follow-up.
