EFFICIENCY OF THE SYSTEM OF TRANSPORT CONNECTIONS BETWEEN POLISH SEAPORTS AND THEIR ECONOMICAL HINTERLAND
Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 1992, Vol 19, Issue 2
Abstract
At present, the functioning of seaports is characterized by two main phenomena - increase of interport competition and gradual fading away of the traditional idea of port hinterland, and the treatment of the seaport by customers and shippers as an element of the land-sea transport chain connecting the consignor and consignee. Selection of a port is increasingly often based on the degree to which it is effectively linked with land distribution systems, and on the frequency of shipping connections. Competition concerns not only separate ports but also whole land-sea transport chains of which seaports are a part.Effects of these phenomena are increasingly strongly felt by Polish seaports; their future will increasingly depend on the efficiency of transport connections with their domestic and international economic hinterland.
